After a weekend of Monster Jam action in Birmingham, Alabama, the team returned to Bristol, Tennessee for a week of repairs, and we mean repairs as in an entire engine rebuild. Randy and Tom ripped the engine out of RAD RACING WAR WIZARD on Monday and quickly went to work rebuilding it from the ground up. After several days of blood, sweat, and tears, the team pushed the rebuilt engine back into RAD RACING WAR WIZARD and fired her up. A few throttle adjustments, and a few minutes to allow the fuel to hit the engine, and she was firing on all cylinders and ready for Monster Jam live on SPEED from Atlanta, Georgia.
The team arrived early Friday in Atlanta for a promotional display at Advance Auto Parts in Marietta, Georgia. Randy Moore and the team met with Monster Jam fans from all over the Atlanta area signing autographs, handing out hero cards, and taking pictures with RAD RACING WAR WIZARD fans. The team loaded up after the display was over and headed to the Georgia Dome to tire up and prepare for battle.
Saturday morning RAD RACING WAR WIZARD was ready to rock and roll. The truck was running great, and the engine work by Tom paid off. The truck drove down from the pits into the Georgia Dome and on to the venues floor where a massive pit party would soon take place.
A very lengthy drivers meeting ran all the way up to 2pm when the official Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam Built Ford Tough Party in the Pits kicked off. Tens of thousands of fans piled on to the Georgia Dome floor to get their favorite drivers autographs and photos taken. The pit party lasted over 3 hours until 5:30. The fans cleared out, and the monsters were just hours away from duking it out.
Legends cars came out to rip up the Georgia Dome with exciting, dirt slinging racing. Quad Wars during several rounds of action between 5:30pm and 7:12pm. At 7:12 the lights dimmed, the 60 second count-down started, and people rushed to their seats. The national anthem quickly started, and afterwards it was on. In less than 15 minutes 14 of Monster Jam's best monster trucks were aboutt to make history inside the Georgia Dome. Monster Jam was about to go live on SPEED Channel from Atlanta, Georgia.
Qualifying started at 7:30pm. Several trucks went before Randy Moore, laying down impressive times until Randy Moore hit the track and laid down the fastest qualifying time yet. After all 14 trucks ran, Randy sat in 5th position overall, with Dennis Anderson in Grave Digger clinching the top spot.
Round 1 of racing paired RAD RACING WAR WIZARD against Captain's Curse. The Chicago-style track combined with tacky Georgia clay meant trucks had to go into the corners slower than usually, going too fast would put you up and over on your lid. Randy laid down a fast run and ended up defeating Captain's Curse by over a truck length, advancing RAD RACING WAR WIZARD into Round 2.
Round 2 action had RAD RACING WAR WIZARD taking on Monster Mutt. RAD RACING WAR WIZARD had the lead the entire time until the final turn when the rear steer on RAD RACING WAR WIZARD went out, a hydraulic pump malfunctioned disabling the rear steer and preventing Randy from making the tight turn needed to send him to the finish line first.
Tom went to work on RAD RACING WAR WIZARD to prepare it for freestyle. Fixing the rear steer issue would be easy. Every high performance part imaginable has been put on to RAD RACING WAR WIZARD, but for some reason the rear steering continues to plague the team on a constant basis, usually causing a hydraulic line to blow, spewing fluid all over the place. Tom fixed the rear steer issue and halfway through the field of 13 other monster trucks RAD RACING WAR WIZARD was ready for freestyle.
Coming out of the gate strong, Randy nailed everything in sight from the racing crush car stacks to the bus stacks. The truck was performing flawlessly, Randy was having fun and putting on a hell of a run for the sold out crowd of over 70,000 Georgia fans. With seconds left on the clock, RAD RACING WAR WIZARD nailed the bus stack at an angle with the truck launching off of the ramp and sending Randy and RAD RACING WAR WIZARD for one heck of a sideways ride. The truck hit hard on the dirt causing the right front tire to break off from a weak spindle. The tire and truck both quickly came to a complete stop thanks to the wheel tether system installed on the truck, and Randy Moore jumped out quickly. Truck damage consisted of a bent 4-link, busted hydraulic fluid lines, a faulty grounding clamp from the batteries not allowing the truck to restart, and a few other small things. Suffering a rollover, you would think the RAD RACING WAR WIZARD would be beat up more, surprisingly the fiberglass body didn't suffer any damage, and only small equipment took the brunt of the impact.
After the show ended the team went to work replacing the broken spindle and other equipment. The truck was loaded up into the hauler and at around 2am Sunday morning RAD RACING WAR WIZARD was heading home to Bristol for some R&R. Next weekend we invade Nashville, TN. See ya there!
